Dugongs are rarely seen, although they are distributed along coastlines both in the Andaman Sea and
the Gulf of Thailand. Recently, aerial surveys of dugong populations along the Andaman Sea coast have
been conducted using small aircraft, a helicopter and a Polaris Flying Boat. A total of 50 and 38 dugongs
were observed in 1997 and 1999, respectively. The area with highest abundance of dugong observed during
aerial survey was at Talibong-Muk Islands, Trang Province. This area is recommended for protection as a
Dugong Sanctuary of Thailand.
