We are pleased to present PMBC Research Bulletin No. 81, which covers various aspects of marine flora and fauna biodiversity, ecology and fisheries management. One paper examines the clupeiform fishes in the PMBC Reference Collection. This fish taxon, which includes 35 species in the region, is of great ecological and economic importance. Two papers deal with the deep-sea fishes from the Andaman Sea collected by R/V Chakratong Tongyai during 1996-2000 (Biodiversity of the Andaman Sea project, BIOSHELF). The first of these papers deals with the pelagic order Myctophiformes, a group that often forms the quantitative majority of mesopelagic fishes. The other of these papers deals with the cartilaginous fishes, the orders Chimaeriformes, Cacharhiniformes, Torpediniformes and Rajiformes – a poorly studied group. Two papers are dedicated to the study of deep-sea shrimps also collected during the BIOSHELF project. The first of them deals with the genus Glyphocrangon where morphology and taxonomy are carefully studied. The other one is an investigation of the morphology and taxonomy of the genus Nematocarcinus. One paper evaluates the performance of artificial reefs as a fisheries management tool in the Gulf of Thailand. This study is likely to have broader implications. The last paper is a short note investigating the diversity and dynamics of marine phytoplankton communities on the continental shelf of the Andaman Sea, Thailand. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Claus Nielsen (1938–2024), a member of its Advisory Editorial Board (Zoology) during 1985–2023. Claus Nielsen was a distinguished zoologist and former curator at the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He conducted marine biological research in Phuket since the early days of PMBC, contributed articles to the PMBC Research Bulletin. He was internationally recognized for his pioneering work in invertebrate zoology, marine biology and animal evolution, and was especially known for his seminal research on the larval forms of marine invertebrates. Over the course of his long academic career, he made fundamental contributions to the understanding of metazoan phylogeny, particularly through the study of trochophore larvae and lophophorates. He was instrumental in developing the museum’s invertebrate collections and promoting research and public understanding of marine biodiversity. His work earned him a prominent position in the global zoological community, where he was widely respected not only for his scientific insight but also for his collegiality and generosity. Beyond his research, Claus Nielsen was a dedicated mentor and teacher, known for his calm demeanor, encyclopedic knowledge, and thoughtful guidance. His legacy lives on in the many scientists he inspired and the body of work he leaves behind. Claus Nielsen is remembered with deep appreciation and gratitude by colleagues, students, and friends around the world. He will be sorely missed.
